Some people associate transformer stations with concrete “blocks”, others with poles situated along the streets. With their shapes – usually archaic ones – transformer stations quite specifically blend into their environment. It is a well-known fact that we want to have electricity, but do the transformer stations have to look like that?

Installation of a transformer station consists in its location within the precincts of the plot and after connection with medium-voltage cables to the energy network, where from electricity is supplied through low-voltage cables to the final recipient. This is a standard solution in case of energy companies supplying electricity. Yet few people reflect on the profitability of such type of connection, therefore we will try to analyse it.

Let us assume that the transformer station is situated 190 m from a building, to which we are to supply electricity. The cost of connection of low-voltage cables (including the purchase price for the cables and their layout) will amount to according to the pricelist PLN 184,480.60. When the plant works 24/7 for seven days a week, than on such a section we generate losses in energy consumption in the amount of PLN 7,471.17 in a month, and PLN 89,654.08 in a year, which gives as much as PLN 896,540.83 of losses within the period of 10 years!

In the era of energy-saving bulbs and passive houses making use of renewable energy sources and fashion for ecology gaining increasing popularity each year, leads to a question of how we could reduce such losses?

An effective solution would be movement of a transformer station to the plant’s or company’s seat, as close to machines and equipment as possible. Such a function is fulfilled by industrial transformer stations ICZ-E. Due to their use we eliminate the necessity of purchasing expensive low-voltage cables that we replace with cheap medium-voltage ones. The plant working 24/7 for seven days a week reduces losses to the amount PLN 48.19 in a month, which gives an annual amount of losses equal to PLN 578.27 and the amount of PLN 5,782.70 for the period of 10 years. The difference in reduction of losses in transmission of electricity that we obtain with the use of an industrial transformer station ICZ-E in comparison to a standard transformer station is substantial.
